About The Channels Children Center

Across the Globe, We Are United in Our Dedication to Children

Who We Are

Adoption is one of the oldest social institutions. Nevertheless, adoption still raises highly emotive issues because of its fundamental implications for the meaning of familial ties

Questions on whether adoption serves the best interests of
children, who should be allowed to adopt and the role of Governments in regulating such decisions are frequent subjects of debate. Yet, despite the heightened attention to these issues, much of the information on adoption remains anecdotal. Data on
the number of children adopted domestically are rarely available and when they are, they tend to be out-of-date. Similarly,
comparable information on trends in inter-country adoptions—that is adoptions that involve a change of country of residence
for the adopted person is often lacking or is available for just a few countries.”

This orphanage home, in collaboration with the Gender Development Department of the Social Development Secretariat of Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, aims to provide care, support and protection for orphaned and street children. However, we believe that no child should be left without a whole family. Familial ties are grounding and give a child a better sense of identity, empowering them with the ability to answer the question, “who am I?

Our Approach

ABOUT NO CHILD TRASHING

The No Child Trashing! campaign is a social development project aimed at saving lives by reducing the alarming rate of infancy and child abandonment. Over 100 babies are found abandoned each week in remote areas where little help is slow to come before the child is lost. The Channels Children Center is the host of this campaign and has taken necessary steps to rehabilitate young mothers and mothers-to-be who, for one reason or another, believe they have no other choice but to abandon their newborns.
Due to the economic and security problems prevalent in the country, acts of rape, abuse, and abandonment are at an all time high. Rampaging terrorists, kidnappers and the unemployed youth have made room for a pathetically high number of cases of infant babies and children found in unsavory locations – in gutters, bushes, rubbish bins or worse; these numbers come from reported cases that are estimated to be just one-third of the overall number of cases in Nigeria. Whereas the unreported cases are numbered in the thousands. It is not uncommon to hear the shrieking cries of infant babies left abandoned and hungry in scathing hot weather or extreme environments.
One such case The Center was called into was of Alexander who was found in the bush, badly bitten by a snake with a dent in his head from blunt trauma (likely from the impact of a rock when he was thrown into the bush). Barely a week after Lil Zan (as he was affectionately called by the staff) was found and brought to The Center, he died in the hospital while receiving treatment. Another pathetic case is of the little warrior named Aziel, a baby that was dumped in an open latrine (toilet). He fought for his life even as he struggled through the trauma of having so much fecal matter in his system. Sadly, he also did not survive passed the week.

— Our Mission

With the recent surge of abandoned children in our society over the years, we find it is our duty to find a solution. We approach this by working with the Social Development Secretariat in Abuja and collaborating with orphanages across the country in rescuing abandoned children and set them up in a safe and loving home where their physical, spiritual, and emotional wellbeing can be fulfilled. In doing so, we hope to provide an avenue for happiness for couples and families who are unable to have children through other means (natural child birth, IVF or surrogacy) or are seeking to make an addition to their home. In all this, confidentiality is guaranteed through the process.
